Finding Purpose in Your Life

 "I

"If you encounter difficulties in choosing a life purpose, the problem may be further upstream. Dive deeper into your understanding of reality. Question your beliefs, especially the ones you were taught never to question. What if you’re wrong? My current beliefs about reality bear little resemblance to those I was raised to adopt."                                                                                                                                                                             Steve Pavlina

Do you feel like something is "off" in your life?

Are you going through the motions but never feel the enthusiasm and passion of living with purpose?

Have you examined what you truly want? Or what will truly create a happier life for you?

Living with purpose is really a process where you take the time to explore your belief systems, what you were conditioned to believe through your family, society, and your own experience, and evaluating these beliefs to decide if they are accurate.

Living with purpose is choosing what beliefs and desires are authentically yours.

Exploring your purpose is a difficult task!

It requires suspending your beliefs, opening your mind to possibilities, thinking big.

It helps to start with your passions - the things really give you energy, where you lose all sense of time, and you feel confident and competent doing them.

Look at your strengths and be honest about what you are good at. Are you using your core strengths daily? Can you use them in your work?

Don't believe the lie of the "quick fix". Training your brain to think differently is a marathon not a sprint.

Try a visualization exercise to get started:

1. Take 3 deep breaths, close your eyes.

Think about a time when you felt totally alive and powerful. Your body tingled with excitement and energy. Everything was working for you and you were feeling fantastic.

Who was there? Where were you? What was it like for you?

Now open your eyes and jot down your answers.

2. Take 3 deep breaths, eyes closed.

Now see yourself on the side of a highway, with a billboard off in the distance ahead of you. You can't read it clearly from where you are, but as you get closer, so walk towards it until you can read it.

As you get close enough, you see that it is YOUR message to the world on that billboard.

People will see it and it will impact them.

What does it say?

Write down that message now.

3. Again, 3 deep breaths, eyes closed.

You've just been left on a far away, uninhabited planet. There is no sign of other people or that anyone has ever lived or visited there.

You have the power to make this planet in any way you wish.

As you look around, touch the earth of the planet and say "This planet will be..." and fill in the blank. Use as many words and ideas as you want. How do you want to build this new planet so it reflects your priorities and desires and values?

Jot these down now.

On reflection, what stands out to you as important here? What values are showing up? What impact are you making on others? Is there a theme

Now, draft a purpose statement:

"I am the ______________________ that _________________________"

In the first blank space, use a metaphor to describe yourself (maybe a light, a path, an instrument of some kind).

In the second space, describe your impact.

Try it - it will take several attempts and some time so be patient with yourself.

After all, you're building a life here!

Do you want to explore your purpose more fully?

Let's get started!
