Skills You Need For Landing a WFH Position

Remote work has certainly become the norm during the pandemic, and now that employers have seen that it actually works and have adjusted to having a remote workforce, it is likely to continue to be an option for many businesses.

As a job seeker, if you are looking for a remote WFH job, either because you prefer to avoid all that people contact until Covid-19 is more comfortably under control or you work more productively at home, you have to navigate a whole new set of skills that many of us did not have pre-Covid.

Time & task management:

  • Are you able to stay focused and reach goals and deadlines while working at home?
  • Can you show a potential employer how you have achieved that?
  • Do you use an Outlook calendar? Do you set up tasks on Outlook to remind you of what is important and when your deadlines are?

Self-motivation & focus:

  • Do you tend to procrastinate when you work at home?
  • Do you alter your work schedule in such a way that you are not available during regular business hours?
  • Can you set up in a separate area dedicated to work so that the dishes and laundry and other distractions are out of sight?
  • Be prepared to share your successes in staying motivated.

Comfort with technology:

  • For some people, the change to using technology and software is more difficult than for others.
  • How do you stay up to date on application that allow for team collaboration, inline virtual meetings, or sharing documents?
  • Do you learn new applications easily?
  • Are you willing to find some training in applications that may be unfamiliar to you?
  • List the technology and applications that you are using successfully on your resume and mention your adaptability in your cover letter.

Proactive written and oral communication skills:

  • Do you stay connected with your team throughout the day?
  • Do you send feedback on projects regularly?
  • Or do you wait for structured meetings or for contact from your boss to provide information?
  • Make sure you stress how well you maintain your communication with others!
