Food for Thought: What does your "today" look like?

There are so many questions we all have right now. How do we get through the lockdowns and the pandemic fears, the job loss and the economic downturn? How do we keep a positive mindset? How do we cope with the stress? How do we move forward?

One piece of wisdom that I was taught many years go: Focus on today. Yesterday is gone and not a thing you can do about it. Tomorrow has not arrived and the only way to influence what tomorrow might bring is to focus on today.

So, what does your "today" look like?

Consider:

  •     Self-care
  •     Meditation
  •     Movement
  •     Tackling one household chore
  •     Scheduling a set time for job search activities

When we dwell in the past, we get stuck there. When we anticipate the future, our imagination can keep us stuck in the moment - where anxiety or sadness or fear can live.

However, if we set realistic goals just for one day, we can get a sense of accomplishment and a sense control over our lives.

One thing to be aware of: Needing to be constantly busy is a trauma response.

Taking time to rest, to go for a walk in nature or just in our own neighbourhood, to meditate or to listen to music are all healthy choices. It's ok to give yourself permission to look after yourself.

We are stronger together.  If you are unemployed and feeling alone, you are welcome to join https://www.meetup.com/job-seekers-support-circle-meetup-group/ where we have weekly online get-togethers to share our experience, offer tips on job searching, and help one another to overcome that feeling of being alone.
