Job Postings - Myths and Truths

SCENARIO:

You've decided to search through Indeed or another site to see what jobs are out there in your field. You find a couple that look interesting. You scan the job description, if there is one, and you review the qualifications required.

Myth #1:    Employers know that it is unlikely they will find that "perfect" candidate that can tick every         box on their wish list.

Truth:        When they brainstorm for the posting, employers will list all the qualities they wish they could find. If they happen to find someone with all of the qualities, then they hit the jackpot! They will tend to list the most important qualities they are looking for first in their list. This may not always be the case, but it is very common.

Truth:        Often employers are adding some expectations that a lot of people feel will disqualify them. Sometimes this is meant to restrict the number of resumes they receive. Sometimes they are just inexperienced at writing job postings!

Myth #2:    I can't apply to jobs if I can't tick all the boxes on the wish list

Truth:        YES YOU CAN! By all means, if you have 30% of the qualities they are asking for, you should give it try! The main thing is to review the top qualities and see how you meet those.

Truth:        The job posing may be asking for a crazy amount of experience. If
you have 50%-75% of the experience (in years) in this field, then go ahead and apply. If you have transferrable skills that make you a desirable
candidate, do ahead and apply.

The ultimate truth:

You have nothing to lose!

It costs you nothing but your time to edit your resume and prepare a customized cover letter to highlight your qualities as they match the employer's needs.

And yes, you do need to demonstrate to each and every potential employer how you can fill their needs. They have told you what they need. Now you must show them what you can offer to help them.
